UK Carp Fishing Tackle – A Collection of Terms and Definitions
Carp fishing tackle may be specially made. The following is a concise list of fundamentals words in reference to carp fishing apparatus and carp fishing gear.
Terms Related to the Carp Species
Barbels: The 2 organs on the upper jaw of a carp that look like whiskers. Barbels make it easier for carp to find their food in dirty water.
Cloopers: Carp that are feeding on the surface.
Mudders: Carp that are feeding on the bottom. This is obvious from the large amount of mud the push up.
Coarse fish: All species that are not members of the trout or salmon families.
Carp Fishing Tackle -Words Associated with Carp Tackle and Rigs
Leader: A piece of very strong line which measures about 30 to 40 ft.. A leader is attached to the main line because it is more resistant to abrasion. The hook length will next be hooked to the leaders end for the attachment of the the carp bait.
Shock leader: A section of especially durable line that can hold up to the force of distant casting.
Feeder: A lesser item of carp tackle; it is a cage which is connected to the leader rather than a sinker. Bait is pressed into the feeder to attract the carp to the baited hook.
Float: A bobber which is more responsive than the popular white and red globes. Floats are lengthy and slim and are used as signals to detect bites and also instruments for offering the bait up to the carp fish.
Semi-fixed: This is an item of carp fishing tackle that will make it possible for the leader to separate from the line in the event of snags. A bolt rig is a variation of the semi-fixed rig that automatically hooks the carp when the leader tightens.
Fixed: Refers to tackle or leaders that do not slide along the line and do not come free when the main line breaks.
Stringer: Baits that are hook-less and are positioned close to the bait that is hooked—these are “free flowing” bait.
Terminology Connected with Carp Bait
Tiger nut: A small size tuber that serves as outstanding carp catching bait which is terrific bait for attracting carp}. Tiger nuts must be boiled until thick and sticky before use.
Chum: This is bait tossed in the water to lure the fish to the area of the hook bait.
Boilie: A piece of dough that is round and hardened and used for bait. Boilies are made up of a mixture of water and an assortment of grains; a thick dough is made from this—then, the dough is formed into ball shapes which are boiled.
