Bananarama
I must admit that I honestly thought the Windward Islands banana trade had died years ago. I didn't realise that we were hanging on by our fingernails still. Well, at least until next year when the giant conglomerates will finally have put the last nail in our collective coffins.
By the way, for years I had refused to buy imported apples, grapes and what-not after I discovered that the vast majority of the grapes sold in Grenada come from.... flipping Dole! I broke that boycott when Toddler YY was born, and after I found out that the foreign fruit sold at Andall's supermarket came from the UK not Latin America (not like that is much better but..). Andall's is no more, but I still do buy apples, grapes and pears from a great street vendor in Grand Anse on Sundays. And everytime I do I hope against all hope that I do not spy a Dole or Chiquita sticker anywhere in sight. 'Cos if I did, then you know I'd have to reinstate the foreign fruit boycott again. And Toddler YY would never know what a pear tastes like.
I must admit I have always been surprised that the Windward Island governments didn't try to regulate (whoops... forgot about the WTO) the importation of produce specifically from Dole and Chiquita. I mean.... they destroy our little puny agricultural contribution to the world, and we in turn put $$ in their pockets by purchasing their stuff? What gives?
YY
ps: I also refuse to buy any tinned or packaged products from Dole and Chiquita. Just my little form of protest, y'know.
